What is a Good Job?

Common knowledge teaches that the “Best Job” is the right combination of (1) What you like to do, (2) What you are good at, and (3) What you can get paid the most to do. The more overlap between these, the “better” the job supposedly will be. Notice that you are at the center of this equation – and when we put ourselves at the center of anything, it never satisfies for long.

Another Way to Work

Work, in its purest form, is a three-way exchange of value that glorifies our creator. The purpose of work is to serve others and glorify God. We are each uniquely gifted – with talents, resources, motivations, skill sets, and experiences – which we can maximize by putting to use for the needs of others. A good job also enables the rest of our life when we receive appropriate value in exchange for the work we do.

The Greatest Way

At the center of these three areas, we find more joy, satisfaction, and value for ourselves and those we serve – the more the overlap, the greater the joy and satisfaction.

This is true because we replaced ourselves at the center. Instead, the center is now the One who made us, loves us, and gives us the greatest purpose.  Our greatest opportunity in our jobs is to share our gifts — including our greatest gift, Jesus. All of life - including work - is God’s. When you know and understand the life purpose God has given you, you can’t help but work toward true significance in everything you do.
