Something's Gotta Change

Something's Gotta Change

The world's greatest achievements started with the need for change — the recognition of an opportunity or a problem that needed to be solved. Organizations and individuals may be forced to change when they reach a dead end. Organizations and people can also change voluntarily when they see a better way. The recognition of the need for a new way forward is the best time to be strategic.

Come senators, congressmen, please heed the call.
Don't stand in the doorway, don't block up the hall.
For he that gets hurt will be he who has stalled.
The battle outside ragin' will soon shake your windows and rattle your walls.
For the times they are a-changin'.

Something’s Gotta Change

Champions are rare. Everybody has some chance, some opportunity to change and improve, but not everybody takes advantage. Be somebody who does.” - Nick Saban

I didn't love the job that I had at the time, and I really wanted a way out of it. If I could sell enough tortillas just to allow me to do that, make up for the salary that I'd be losing teaching, which wasn't much, by the way, so it wouldn't have been that hard.

That was enough for me, but I wasn't thinking it would be what it is today. That was just not even imaginable to me.” - Veronica Garza of Siete Food, from How I Built This with Guy Raz: “Siete Family Foods”

Change Needs a Strategy

The world's greatest achievements started with the need for change — the recognition of an opportunity or a problem that needed to be solved.

Organizations and individuals may be forced to change when they reach a dead end. In this case, an adaptive strategy is needed.

Organizations and people can also change voluntarily when they see a better way. The recognition of the need for a new way forward is the best time to be strategic. In this case, a proactive strategy is needed.

For Nick Saban and Alabama, Something Had to Change When—

He could no longer tell coaches he would be there longterm.

“He wanted to keep his integrity, said in the report that he had grown tired of going through assistant coaches, and no longer felt he could give potential staffers assurance that he would be the head coach long-term.”

When asked about what he thinks about Saban's performance as a part of the college football media, Sarkisian admitted, "I've never seen him smile so much in my life."

"This is unbelievable," Sarkisian said. "I don't know what you guys do, but I've never seen him smile so much."
Saban revealed that Sarkisian isn't the only one of his former assistants who is noticing a different side of him. "These guys text me and say 'who is this guy,'" Saban said.

For Siete, Something Had to Change When–

Lupus prevented Veronica Garza from participating in family activities.

Siete might just be the only billion-dollar company that exists because of lupus.

Born and raised in the border town of Laredo as a third-generation Mexican-American, Veronica was in high school when she was diagnosed with several autoimmune conditions. After college and business school, she adopted the paleo diet: no grains, dairy, refined sugar or legumes—basically, no Mexican food.

When her family had carne asadas in the backyard, she would bring her own lettuce wraps.
So the other Garzas soon decided they would go paleo, too. They wanted to support her. They also wanted to eat cleaner because the whole family had become completely obsessed with CrossFit workouts.

It was around that time in 2010 when Veronica began experimenting with almond flour to create a new kind of tortilla: one she could actually eat.

For David and Israel, Something Had to Change When–

The armies of the living God were being defied. Goliath and the Philistines were challenging their God and their very existence as a nation. Something had to be done.

Now the Israelites had been saying, “Do you see how this man keeps coming out? He comes out to defy Israel. The king will give great wealth to the man who kills him. He will also give him his daughter in marriage and will exempt his family from taxes in Israel.” David asked the men standing near him, “What will be done for the man who kills this Philistine and removes this disgrace from Israel? Who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God?” - 1 Samuel 17:25-26

God Never Changes

One thing never changes: God and his plans and purposes for your life. So, when we realize we need to make a change it’s critical to consider what our unchanging God says.

“I the Lord do not change.” - Malachi 3:6

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. - James 1:17

While God never changes, He does provide everything we need in order to change:

He sent Jesus, His Son, in order that we might change and be brought into perfect union with God.  Jesus does not leave us the same.  He calls us to change and be like Him — transforming everything about us (2 Corinthians 3:18).

And he said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven." - Matthew 18:3

Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. - Psalm 51:10

I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. - Ezekiel 36:26

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here. - 2 Corinthians 5:17

God’s word is clear: our new life in Christ – here on earth – should be one of change and transformation.

So where are you? Are you close to the end of the road in a place where you need to make a change? Are you considering what you care most about – your purpose, value, priorities – and ready to design a strategy for change?

Either way, consider these questions and get ready to make a clever, clever plan.

Questions to consider:

  1. What does your organization need to change the most?
  1. Are you reaching a dead end?
  1. What positive change is most likely to happen — how can you facilitate that change?
  1. What can you do to instigate proactive change?
  1. Do you need to change to a better model or change agent?  What is your clever-clever plan for change?
  1. Where is the glory and love of God inspiring you to change? Where is the will and word of God guiding you to change?
  2. Where is being on mission — following Jesus — creating desire for you to change?
