A Good Eye for Great Work

A Good Eye for Great Work

The way you see the world greatly influences all you know and do. A right view of life and work is crucial to becoming great. The way you see the world greatly influences all you know and do. A right view of life and work is crucial to becoming great.

"The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness". - Matthew 6:22-23 (ESV)

A Distorted View

A distorted view is a limited view that starts from a self-centered perspective. You can only see so far by yourself.

If you view life from a self-centered approach — my day, my talents, my stuff, my job, my needs, my limited time, my control, my goal to gain an advantage today — you will be unable to do the great work you were made to do.

A Clear View

A clear view is full of abundance and opportunities because it sees God and His ways as the starting point. You can see further than you can dream or imagine following Jesus who made you and loves you.

Followers of Jesus have an advantage in doing great work. They know life is a gift, each moment is an opportunity, time lasts forever, and resources are abundant. They learn that using gifts for others leads to more gifts, and great work leads to a better life for all.

We all have cloudy eyes sometimes. Jesus tells us exactly how to have healthy eyes that lead to a clear view for life and work.

A Good Eye Sees Truth

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus teaches about how to have right relationships with God and others, including life-giving wisdom on how to view money and possessions.

Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!

No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.” - Matthew 6:19-24

See What Lasts

Jesus is saying to take the long view of life. Do not be consumed by this life and all its temporary possessions, but instead value eternal life with Him above all things.

  • Don’t focus on collecting more —  storing up, or the protection of temporary assets like money, possessions, or even power on earth.
  • Store up what lasts — honoring God by doing His will - putting the good of others above earning dollars, gaining assets, or completing projects.
  • Value God and where He is taking you above all things. What you value in your heart is really who you are. What you value impacts all of your actions and outcomes.

Serve What Lasts

Jesus is saying it is impossible to serve Him and money. No one can do it. So serve God alone.

  • Fully Receive — the gifts of life, love, and grace and all you have been given from your Creator and Redeemer Jesus. Everything you have is from God (Romans 11:36). Constantly thank and praise your Creator (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18) for all of your gifts and talents, as well as the time and opportunity you have to use them.
  • Be Generous — give away what you have. Yes, this means money and possessions, and it also means your greatest gifts. Give your life, love, grace, and mercy to others who need them. Focus all of your talents and gifts on the opportunity to serve those you work with and lead – making their lives better.
